Blown

It is windy in Kansas.

That's the sum total of my reflections for the week.
At least a week and a half of wind more than 20 mph.

Windy makes me whiny.
But I've been riding. Oh, I have been riding.
Squished around every other part of my life. I have been riding.
Bent down into headwinds, I have been riding.
White knuckled steering through crosswinds, I have been riding.
A few brief and glorious wind-pushed moments, I have been riding.

And on that glorious day when it is cool and calm,
I will sail on legs made strong from pushing against the wind.
Yes I will.

Have you ever read the novel "Gilead"?

I have, almost two years ago now. I loved it.

Have you?

Yes! I think it's the most beautiful novel I've ever read — just in terms of language and the naturalness of the narrative voice and the author's empathy. It's the most profound book I've ever encountered about Christianity. I was thinking about it for some reason the other day, and I thought you would like it.

This may seem like a strange choice, but I think the most beautiful novel I’ve ever read is The Assistant. But I’ve never read Gilead, so perhaps it’s more beautiful.

There is quite a bit of ugliness to the story, but that contrasts with the beautiful parts of the story and the beauty of the language to make them more beautiful.

I agree, kc, that Gilead is a beautiful book, it is one to be savored, read slowly because there is much so on which to reflect. As opposed to the aforementioned "Snow" (still not done) that is read slowly b/c it is just damn slow.

I think it's amazing that Robinson could know the heart and head of a preacher so well without being one herself.

Have you read Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"? I read it in August and would love to talk about it with someone. It is bleak and powerful. I see on Amazon.com that Oprah has claimed it. Damn it! What right does she have to stick her name on the front cover? It already won the Pulitzer but now that she has graced it with the "O" I am sure it will triple the sales.

I am not a fan of the Oraph empire.

Yeah, ditto on Oprah.

No, I have not read "The Road," but I will soon and I'll let you know.

I did read fairly recently McCarthy's "No Country For Old Men" and thought it was fantastic.

I like that Robinson has only two novels, and they are both magnificent. She must have savored writing them.
